2 student assistant positions at the Biomedical Network Science Lab (Dep. AIBE)

Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst u. a.

Both students assistants will work in the context of a project which aims at developing mathematical models and initial algorithmic ideas for unsupervised disease mechanism mining methods based on longitudinal omics data. In the context of this project, we are looking for student assistants to address the following tasks:

  • Development of a manually curated data portal for longitudinal omics data: In order to have a solid data basis for the proposed project, one of the two student assistants will compile a manually curated portal for such data. The portal will not only be used internally for the envisaged project, but will also be made available to the scientific community via an API and a web interface.

  • Explorative modelling and method prototyping: The main methodological challenges to be addressed here are (a) to develop concrete ideas on how to formally model what it means that a subnetwork in a feature graph induces a high-quality clustering of longitudinal profiles and (b) to come up with prototypes of algorithms to solve the proposed models.

Both projects are ideally suited for a MSc thesis.

Notwendige Qualifikation

  • Experience in web programming (required for the first task) or algorithmic creativity (required for the second task).
  • Strong (Python) programming skills.
  • Independent work style.
  • Interest for computational systems biology.
  • Matriculation at FAU.
  • BSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Integrated Life Sciences, Medical Engineering, or a related field.

Wünschenswerte Qualifikation

  • Prior experience in the analysis of molecular data.
  • Strong grades.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Paris-Dauphine University and the GREYC Research Lab in Digital Science (Caen, France) and will involve one or two trips to our collaborators in France (to be paid from project funds).

Interested? Then please apply with the following documents:

  • A short cover letter where you state why you are interested in the position.
  • An academic CV.
  • A transcript of records including grades of all courses.
  • A copy of your BSc thesis.
