Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst u. a.

The research in this proposed task is within the METIS (Methods and Models for Energy Transformation and Integration Systems) project. METIS is a cooperation of the Jülich Research Center, the RWTH Aachen University, and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The project aims to develop simulation and optimization tools to analyze energy markets in Germany and Europe. FINE (Framework for Integrated Energy System Assessment) is a package that is part of the optimization framework of the METIS project. FINE includes several mathematical models that are written using the modeling language Pyomo within Python.

Ideally, this task is for a student seeking to write a Masters thesis alongside.
The broad aim of this task is to re-implement the mathematical optimization models within FINE in a more efficient manner. One example is the identification of redundant constraints, and, then, their elimination.
The specific aim of this task is to extend an algorithm that we previously developed (see details below) for the solution of this optimization model. The planned result is an article sent for review with the student as a co-author.

A strong interest in working with Python is essential.

Since the primary tasks of this task are programming, experience with Python is required. Further, a knowledge of discrete optimization corraborated by good grades in these courses is required.

Bemerkungen

The student would be actively assisted by the mentor and researchers at Jülich. The student would also have the opportunity, but is not obligated, to visit the the Juelich Research Center and familiarize himself with the technical basics of energy optimization models as well as support employees in their daily tasks. Writing a funded masters thesis for this subject, assisted by a group of actively involved researchers, offers the student a unique opportunity for his/her professional career.
