The Institute of Glass and Ceramics of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is seeking outstanding candidates for the DFG funded project: Stress-induced tailoring of phase boundaries and energy storage properties in lead-free antiferroelectric

Among the dielectric ceramic capacitor materials, antiferroelectric is the most promising for high power applications due to their relatively high energy density, low dissipation, and fast charge-discharge characteristics. However, the full potential of energy storage performance of lead-free antiferroelectrics has not yet been realized primarily due to the challenges in the synthesis of phase pure and dense ceramic films. While the bulk ceramic capacitor is essential, the thin and thick films are more relevant for device applications. The target of this project is to simultaneously improve the energy storage density and energy storage efficiency of lead-free antiferroelectrics by fabricating ceramic films with unique aerosol deposition (AD) method. The AD is a room temperature deposition technique and is suitable for the fabrication of dense and fined grained ceramic without requiring high-temperature sintering. However, AD processed films possess high internal stress and fine microstructure. As such, the effect of stress, grain size, and the defects on the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transformation will be investigated.

Notwendige Qualifikation

The successful candidate will hold an MSc or equivalent in Materials Science, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, or a related field and have experience in synthesis and characterization of ferroelectric materials. In addition, a solid background in thermodynamics and mechanical behavior of materials is highly desirable. Proficient oral and written communication skills in English are required. The ability to work well in a dynamics and collaborative research environment is essential.

Wünschenswerte Qualifikation

The salary is according to the German standard (E-13 TV-L) with a maximum possible duration of 36 months. The starting date is as soon as possible.
