We are seeking a doctoral fellow to serve as a key member of our research and teaching team. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Candidates should pursue a PhD in a social science discipline such as political science, sociology, social anthropology, development studies or human geography. We would like to hire a promising and motivated applicant with a focus on a country or region in Latin America, with important trade relations with Europe. We are particularly interested in research on the implementation and consequences of supply chain regulations, for instance new human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) laws, or on initiatives to build more sustainable and just trade relations via other innovative approaches (e.g., trade with products that foster socio-biodiversity, projects led by local communities to add value to their products).
The Chair of International Business, Society and Sustainability aims to advance the research frontier by addressing critical themes in interdisciplinary social science research related to sustainable development, business and human rights and environmental governance. Our teaching and research activities revolve around the question of how international business relationships could become more just and sustainable. For discussing this question, we draw on and contribute to different theoretical debates (e.g., environmental justice, business and human rights, telecoupling, political ecology, corporate accountability, sustainability governance of global supply chains) and use diverse mixes of methods (e.g., semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, document analysis, surveys, discourse analysis, transdisciplinary methods, network analysis). As sociopolitical processes and governance arrangements at different scales interact with and shape each other, our research focuses on different scales and cross-scalar linkages.
We expect from the ideal candidate:
- To have a study focus on sustainable development, sustainability governance and socio-ecological transformation from a social science perspective
- Knowledge and experience in doing research in Latin America
- Passion for teaching and the ability to inspire students and to supervise bachelor and master students.
- Enjoy teamwork, curiosity for research, high degree of initiative
- Very good written and spoken German and English or a willingness to learn German in the first two years.
We can offer:
- Good academic and social environment in a motivated team with high research quality
- Possibility for pursuing a PhD
- Possibility to get involved in international and interdisciplinary research networks and to participate in meetings and conferences
- Flexible, independent work on a basis of trust
- The position is remunerated as an employee at E13 (TV-L)
- Spacious old building offices in the heart of the old town
- Extensive training and further education opportunities
Information on the application process:
Required documents: Letter of motivation, CV, certificates and a selected publication written by you as sole or co-author (as a PDF, maximum 50 pages, e.g. a journal article, a contribution to an edited volume or an excerpt from your master thesis). The planned doctoral thesis should be described in a short project outline of 2-3 pages, which clearly shows the relation to the focus of the chair.
Interviews will be scheduled in person or via Zoom, depending on the applicant's availability. Severely disabled persons within the meaning of the Severely Disabled Persons Act will be given preferential consideration if they have the same professional qualifications and personal suitability.
