PhD Position at the Biophysics Group m/f/d

Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst u. a.

We seek for a motivated PhD candidate to work in projects aiming to understand collective behavior in different penguin species and to estimate ecologically relevant parameters such as penguin colony health and foraging success. The candidate is required to have a MSc in physics, mathematics, theoretical ecology or related fields.

The focus of the PhD project (3-year appointment) is on data analysis and modelling. The PhD student will work within a dynamic and interdisciplinary group of researchers from the Biophysics Group at the University of Erlangen, Germany, and the Marine Animal Remote Sensing lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA. Scientists within those groups use computer vision, machine learning and statistical physics methods to analyze remote observations of birds and mammals to increase our understanding of the natural world and support global conservation.

In this project, the candidate will use remote sensing data from our penguin observatories to study collective behavior, colony health and foraging success of three penguin species (Emperor, Adelie and King). The experimental component includes the use and development of computer vision and machine learning methods to analyze existing imaging data. For the data analysis position, previous experience in machine learning and computer vision would be beneficial. The candidate for the modelling position will explore behavioral models that can be used to explain field observations. For this position, previous experience with agent-based models, reaction-diffusion models, or related approaches would be beneficial. The PhD student is expected to actively participate in strenuous field trips (several months long) to Antarctica.

The Erlangen biophysics group (https://bio.physik.fau.de/) studies the fundamental properties of complex soft matter. We strive to understand how soft matter responds to its environment and also study the collective behavior of biological systems. To address these questions, our laboratory collaborates with other research groups worldwide to develop new technologies that draw from various fields, including soft matter physics, molecular cell biology, biochemistry, engineering, and applied mathematics.

The WHOI Marine Animal Remote Sensing Group (https://www2.whoi.edu/staff/dzitterbart/) uses remote sensing methods like photography, radar and passive acoustic monitoring to behavior and ecology of animal groups. We focus on penguins and whales, usually somewhere in the southern hemisphere. The topic of our work is reflected in the group’s composition where we have physicists, biologists and computer scientists.

The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with our colleagues from the Polar Ecology Group at CMS Monaco.

Notwendige Qualifikation

Master's degree in physics, mathematics, theoretical ecology or related fields.
