The Chair of Aroma and Smell Research at FAU offers a PhD position. The successful candidate will perform experimental work to characterize odours of untreated wood samples from a sensory and analytical point of view to achieve a detailed understanding of wood odour and its chemical underpinnings.


Tasks are:

-regular literature research

-self-organised research, in close collaboration with the supervisor and the project partners

-development and validation of sampling and analytical methods to achieve the project goals

-qualitative and quantitative analysis of odour-active compounds (gas chromatography-olfactometry/mass spectrometry), synthesis of reference compounds as needed

-scientific evaluation and interpretation of data, publication and presentation of results together with supervisors and partners

-support of general lab activities, e.g., instruments and sensory evaluations

-academic self-administration

Notwendige Qualifikation

Master of Science degree in chemistry, food chemistry, biochemistry or similar fields

Wünschenswerte Qualifikation

-Knowledge or prior experience in analytical chemistry, synthesis, or biochemistry

-Knowledge or prior experience with chromatographic methods (e.g., (two-dimensional) gas chromatography, liquid chromatography) and in mass spectrometry

-Interest in interdisciplinary work and exchange, eager to learn about cross-disciplinary methods and approaches

-Excellent communication and organisation skills

-Fluency in written and spoken English, German is a plus

-Independent, motivated researcher with team player skills

-Interest in practical lab work

-Knowledge in statistics and data analysis methods

Bemerkungen

The position is funded for three years by the DFG. The contract will be according to the regulations of the TV-L.
