Research Associate / Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (salary level TV-L E 13)

The interdisciplinary Elite Master's program "Standards of Decision-Making Across Cultures" (SDAC) is looking to fill the following position as soon as possible:

Your Tasks

As part of a German Research Foundation (DFG) project, is researched either a predoctoral candidate (TV-L E13 at 78% for 25 months), or a postdoctoral candidate (TV-L E13 at 100% for 19 months).

The contract can be later extended for one additional year.

The position will remain opened until fulfilled. Starting date: negotiable/as soon as possible.

No teaching obligation is associated with the contract, but teaching experience will be offered if desirable.

Your tasks:

  • Participation in research (English language).
  • Carrying out of several months autonomous research fieldwork in a coastal area of southern China or of a country neighboring the South China Sea.
  • Analysis of data and preparation of publications and/or dissertation.
  • Preparation of a PhD or Postdoc project for submission to a third-party founding institution.

Your Profile

Necessary qualifications:

  • MA in sinology, social and cultural anthropology or a related discipline.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Good command of written and spoken Chinese mandarin and/or Cantonese.
  • Interest for human-nonhuman anthropological research in a marine environment.
  • Interest for the anthropological study of Chinese Medicine.
  • Interest for the anthropology of morality and ethics.
  • Demonstrated experience in ethnographic methods and empirical research.
  • Ability to work in a team, good communication skills, strong organizational skills and an independent working style.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Previous experience of life or research in China or in a country neighboring the South China Sea
  • Knowledge of Hakka, Cantonese, Hainanese, or another coastal language or dialect of the South China Sea.
  • Previous experience in writing a research project.
  • Teaching experience.
  • German language skills.
