Scientist in Satellite-based Quantum Cryptography (m/f/d)

The Chair of Optical Quantum Technologies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist working on the EAGLE-I mission, a major project by the European Space Agency (ESA) and EU Commission in the field of satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD). The project offers a unique opportunity to get experience at the forefront of research & development together with top research institutions and major industry.


  • Development on real-world implementation of satellite-based QKD
  • Experimental research & development and implementation of satellite-QKD receiver technology
  • Evaluation and testing of technology before and after satellite launch
  • Participation in measurement campaigns in Europe


Necessary qualifications:

You have a PhD in physics or electrical engineering with experience in experiments with optical/photonics systems.

You are

  • highly motivated and creative in experimental laboratory work
  • reliable and ready to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international team
  • interested in technology, physics and quantum key distribution
  • experienced in laboratory work with optics/photonics components
  • able to take a structured and efficient approach to planning and organizing
  • able to communicate in excellent English, both spoken and written
  • well trained in a programming language such as Python or Matlab or C

Desirable qualifications:

You are experienced in

  • quantum optics and/or quantum cryptography
  • polarization and fiber optics
  • high speed electronics

Depending on personal requirements full-time or part-time work can be arranged. We offer the possibility to organize your working hours flexibly and to work partially in home office by arrangement. A family room is currently being set up at the department for childcare emergencies, and a Kidsbox with toys is already available.

The position is a project-based position. Intended classification is TV-L E13. Intended project duration: 3 years, extension possible depending on project.
