The METIS (Methods and Models for Energy Transformation and Integration Systems) project is a cooperation of the Jülich Research Center, the RWTH Aachen University and FAU. The project aims to develop simulation and optimization tools to analyze energy markets in Germany and Europe. FINE, a Framework for Integrated Energy System Assessment, is a package that is part of the optimization framework of the METIS project. The aim of this student assistantship is to develop programming tools for parallelization of codes within FINE. For this, we use the PIPS package available at: https://github.com/Argonne-National-Laboratory/PIPS/



The research in this proposed thesis is within the METIS (Methods and Models for Energy Transformation and Integration Systems) project. METIS is a cooperation of the Jülich Research Center, the RWTH Aachen University, and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The project aims to develop simulation and optimization
tools to analyze energy markets in Germany and Europe. FINE (Framework for Integrated Energy System Assessment) is a package that is part of the optimization framework of the METIS project.



FINE includes several mathematical models that are written using the modeling language Pyomo within Python. The aim of this Masters thesis is to re-implement the mathematical models within FINE in a more efficient manner. One example is the identification of redundant constraints, and, then, their elimination. As such the thesis performs several computational re-formulations to solve the existing models in a computationally more
tractable way. We compare the improvements of the reformulations by measuring the run-times before and after the implementation. As the main effort of this thesis is computational, a strong interest in working with Python
is essential.



Since the primary tasks of this task are programming, experience with Python is required. A basic knowledge of discrete optimization evidenced by coursework is required. This work builds up on other masters thesis on similar topics; thus, several Python/Pyomo codes are already available. See the published article here:

Notwendige Qualifikation

1. Excellent knowledge of Python
2. Sufficient knowledge of English.

Wünschenswerte Qualifikation

Basic knowledge of Discrete Optimization. Knowledge of Pyomo.

Bemerkungen

The assistantship is also available in collaboration with a bachelor or master thesis. This is preferred. Further, the student would be actively assisted by the mentor and Juelich. The student would also have the opportunity, but is not obligated, to visit the the Juelich Research Center and familiarize himself with the technical basics of energy optimization models as well as support employees in their daily tasks.
