Two student assistantships available for supercomputing projects on mathematical optimization.

Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst u. a.

I am looking for two masters students to work on several exciting projects related to COVID-19. Students will be supported for 10hours/week; depending on performance and interest, the number of hours can be increased to 19hours/week. Tasks involve running existing code (available in GAMS) on a supercomputer. The student will design Python or C code to run the optimization model using available data, and collect and organize the results.
Very good knowledge of Python and C for a supercomputer, demonstrated by past experience is required. Knowledge of GAMS is a plus. A lecture on optimization is a plus as well.
Excellent bachelors students will also be considered.


The project is funded by a grant I have from the Bavarian-Czech Academic Agency.

Position is immediately available.


No prior knowledge of biology or epidemiology is essential. The student would work closely and directly with the supervisor.

We have a large scale mixed-integer optimization program that we solve using a decomposition scheme. Code in GAMS is available for the optimization model as well as the decomposition scheme. Tasks involve running the code with a script that the student would develop on a supercomputer for different data values.

Notwendige Qualifikation

Excellent knowledge of Python or C

Wünschenswerte Qualifikation

Sufficient knowledge of English. Knowledge of GAMS is a plus, but not a requirement. Knowledge of parallel programming is desirable.

Bemerkungen

Depending on the student’s interest – these are not requirements - I offer several opportunities to further develop the student’s career:

1. develop the research into articles with the student as a co-author,

2. collaborate with one of the world’s leading group of scientists in the fight against COVID-19 (https://covid-19.tacc.utexas.edu/people/),

3. write a master thesis on the same topic.
