Processing of scientific questions within the project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG): Insights into Meibomian gland function.

The general aim of the project is to gain deeper insights into the physiology and function of meibomian glands, a group of specialized sebaceous glands in the eyelids. Meibomian glands produce a crucial component of the tear film and are therefore essential for the ocular surface. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) can therefore lead to dry eye disease (DED), which affects around 12 million people in Germany alone and causes chronic irritation and inflammation and even blindness in patients.
In the physiological state, tissue-specific stem cells of the meibomian gland differentiate into mature meibozytes as well as into cells of the excretory duct system (ductal epithelial cells). The project aims to analyze the stem cell biology|* of meibozytes using a newly developed *|tissue Engineering|* approach. In cooperation with the Chair of Applied Mechanics at FAU, the influence of biomechanical properties on lipid production *|(Engineering Meibomian mechanics) will be investigated in order to draw conclusions on the pathogenesis of meibomian gland dysfunction and thus also possible therapeutic approaches.

Spectrum of methods:

  • Morphological, molecular biological, biochemical and biophysical techniques (Western Blot, real-time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry etc.)
  • Computer simulations and reconstructions
  • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
  • Cell culture experiments and ex-vivo tissue cultures of the meibomian Glands
  • Preparation and investigation of murine and human fluid and tissue samples
  • Translational and multidisciplinary orientation of investigations

Notwendige Qualifikation

Qualification characteristics:

  • University degree in human medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, biochemistry or equivalent
  • Great scientific interest, knowledge and practical experience in molecular-cell biological techniques are advantageous
  • High intrinsic motivation, team spirit, interest in eye and eye immunology issues, sociability, independent work
  • Willingness to perform animal experiments
  • No participation in student teaching

Bemerkungen

We bid:

A position to be filled from 15.09.2020 at the earliest and initially limited until 14.09.2023 (65%) with fixed working hours as well as remuneration according to TV country. In addition, the usual social benefits of the Bavarian public service are offered.

The Institute for Functional and Clinical Anatomy offers the opportunity for self-responsible, scientific qualification in teamwork with colleagues active in research and teaching. The project and the candidate will be integrated into the structured program of the Medical Faculty Life@FAU (https://www.life.fau.de/teilnahme/anmeldung/). University, regional, national and international cooperation possibilities exist.
